Bio

The Dr. Orphyus Project is currently a one-man entity with a musical focus ranging from extreme death metal to jazz.  With influences as varied as Mr. Bungle and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, it is not surprising that The DOP takes such a schizophrenic approach to music.

The band as a whole is the brainchild of Ryan Morris.  His vision is to create unique and original music that incorporates his numerous influences as well as numerous instrumental disciplines.  The DOP released its first full-length album in January 2006.  Entitled Opaque Imagery, the CD found itself distributed to numerous individuals by Morris himself as well as cdbaby.com.  Later in 2006, Morris teamed up with TorC Press to create Death Nouveau Episode I:  Strange Noir, a comic book/CD hybrid that fused the worlds of art and music.  Death Nouveau is still being circulated both at comic conventions and at The Dr. Orphyus Project’s live shows which feature another melding of art and music. A DOP live show is unlike any of its kind.  While singing and playing guitar and trombone, Morris is accompanied by video showcasing the art of TorC press creator Joseph Morris.  Spectators have responded with comments such as, “That is the craziest thing I have ever seen,” and “Now I’ve seen everything.”

In 2009, the Dr. Orphyus Project moved on to another form of expression:  the concept album.  Recorded between January and February 2009, An Introvert tells the story of an unknown creature’s experience and untimely demise with the world around him.  An Introvert is also accompanied by original video and was featured on The DOP’s first mini-tour.  With fellow band Necropolis, The DOP booked and performed at a handful of venues between St. Louis, MO, and Amarillo, TX, including opening for the one-man band Bloodsoaked (Comotose Records).  Following this tour, The Dr. Orphyus Project continued its onstage onslaught with one-off shows in Chicago and St. Louis playing with the legendary Yakuza (Prosthetic Records).  In 2010, The DOP completed a ten date tour, sharing the stage with Psychostick and Look What I Did.

Also in 2010, Morris released Death Nouveau Episode II:  Baroque Western, once again with comic-book publisher TorC Press.  Baroque Western is another cd/comic book hybrid along the lines of Strange Noir, however with this story and music having a decidedly avante-garde Western feel.

In March of 2011, The Dr. Orphyus Project went on tour in Europe as a part of the Underground All Stars European tour with Waco Jesus, Putrid Pile, Altered Existence, and Potential Threat.  This seventeen-day tour saw The DOP performing in seven different countries and numerous legendary clubs around Europe.  Only six months later, Morris released The Dr. Orphyus Project’s third full-length album.  Death Jazz was a return to shorter-length songs, but another step forward in the creation of unique music.  A nine-day tour followed taking The Dr. Orphyus Project to five new states in the Midwest.

2012 saw The Dr. Orphyus Project’s continual support of Death Jazz on the road.  One short tour in the spring and the longer “Ten Days in a Ranjo Tour” in the fall took The DOP to new venues in the U.S. as well as returning to several spots from previous tours.

In November of 2013 The Dr. Orphyus Project returned to Europe as part of the “European Indoctrination Tour” featuring Waco Jesus, Inhume, and Wretched Pain.  Hitting the studio once again in 2015 The Dr. Orphyus Project recorded “Existential Crisis Parts 1 and 2” as part of a four-way split for Brutal Arratia Records.  Also that year, The Dr. Orphyus Project contributed to Fecal Addiction’s latest album, and completed a short US tour that included a performance at The Full Terror Assault Fest.
2016 will see the completion of The Dr. Orphyus Project’s fourth studio album entitled, The Roustabout, which will continue the band’s direction of shorter length, but no less chaotic brand of musical mayhem.
